Yesterday, my business coach made an observation about the way I work that was both amusing and accurate (if not a little bit vulnerable).
He said, "The thing that excites you and the thing that makes you feel guilty are the same thing."
I'd mentioned how I love working in sprints which ultimately requires significant rest to recharge––and I feel guilty about that, but there's something about the urgency of sprints that just gives my brain the dopamine hit it craves.
This genuinely bothers me. Why choose the chaos?
But when he asked why I operate like this, I said almost immediately with great enthusiasm: "because it's so fun!"
We both laughed.
It is fun! Is it unnecessarily nerve-wrecking as well? Well, yes, that too. Sometimes wildly inefficient? Fine, sure. But also really fricken fun.
I think the most important thing to remember is the best way to work is to accept what works for you––without criticism, without wishing you were any other way.
The Architect sits and plans and draws and calculates and measures.
The Painter stands and slaps paint on a canvas and tilts her head and lets shape emerge.
Neither is wrong.
I've seen exquisite pieces made by both.
BEHIND THE BUSINESS
Invited back to HUUB for a Live Demo: 5 Tools to Make Your Life Easier
Arguably the most generous small business advisement and technical assistance program out there, HUUB, invited me back to speak and demo a handful of my favorite tools this Thursday, August 13th. I love doing things like this.
We'll walk through five tools that take the most time-consuming parts of running a service business—getting found, booking clients, and staying in front of people—and make them dramatically easier. None of them require a tech background, and every single one is something you can start using this week.
Some are super simple and have made a remarkable difference for both my clients and me.
The event is free for COHOOTs and HUUB Members, and only $3 for the general public. Come live if you can to ask questions and potentially win a Love is the Business Plan mug.
