Early in my advising career, I made the mistake of asking people what they want.

"A million dollars in the bank," was a pretty consistent response and it couldn't be a more useless answer. Money is a tool to produce a feeling: safety, freedom, admiration.

If you can figure out the feeling you're after, you can very likely hack it––without the money.

Congratulations, you have $1M dollars in the bank

As you're sitting here reading this newsletter, imagine you've got 1M cash in your bank account. It's sitting there right now just racking up interest. Awesome.

What now? What are you doing? What's different in this moment? Do you stop reading? Do you...brush your teeth differently or hire someone to help you put on your pants?

What has changed in this moment?

Really sit and feel it. If it's helpful you can say, "I have $1,000,000 cash in my bank account right now."

What now?

Two things typically happen with this exercise:

  1. You realize nothing actually is different in this moment.
  2. You notice you'd rather be doing something else, something other than what you're doing right now.

If it's the latter, it's important to take note of this and take it seriously because that's what you should be working towards.

(Ps: chances are it will not require a million dollars).

📈 Behind the Business: Making Pay-What-You-Want Products

This is a screenshot taken today of the "Pay What You Want" products I've made available. People have the option to pay zero dollars, and roughly 5% decide to pay an average of $10. Isn't that awesome?

Some say it's unrealistic to expect this level of generosity and I realize that I can't stand that word.

When they say “that’s unrealistic,” I often wonder what they mean.

Are you saying it’s rare?
Are you saying it’s difficult?
Are you saying it’s not worth trying?

  • Because flying 3500 miles in a chair in the sky sipping ginger ale is unrealistic.
  • Pushing a watermelon out of a 2-inch hole is unrealistic.
  • Going to an ivy-league school for playing a game is unrealistic.
  • Making a living by selling the thoughts in your head is unrealistic.

And yet each of these is the reality for someone I know.

So when you say, “it’s unrealistic,” what do you mean exactly?

Cheers to the wild privilege of creating a new reality––however long it takes,
